Who Meets With the School Counselor?
Everyone can meet with Ms. Armstead throughout the school year! School counseling programs are designed to meet the academic, career, and social/emotional needs of students, in a developmentally appropriate way. In order to meet these needs, monthly classroom lessons will be taught in your student's class. In addition to whole group lessons, some students will be invited to participate in small group counseling. These groups are typically held during lunch or recess time on a weekly basis, for about 6-8 weeks. Group topics may include: stress management, social skills training, study skills, and self-esteem. Parent permission is required for these groups. Some students may request, or be recommended, for periodic or ongoing individual counseling sessions. Parents and school staff are also encouraged to collaborate and consult with the school counselor to help students reach their full potential.
What Does a School Counselor Do?
School counselors design, implement, and assess school counseling programs based on the specific needs of their school. They plan and facilitate whole group, small group, and individual counseling. They are trained to coordinate with parents, teachers, administrators, and other mental health professionals to facilitate successful student development. Counselors also serve as consultants for parents and teachers to think through problems and concerns related to students. In specific cases, counselors work with other support personnel to support students in crisis such as the Psychologist, Alternative Educator, and Pupil Personnel Worker. Counselors may also be found working on various school committees, planning school-wide events, and working with outside agencies.
